Struggling with compulsive sexual behavior is an experience marked by intense shame, secrecy, and the painful awareness that behavior is out of control despite sincere attempts to stop. At New Convictions Recovery, our licensed counselors provide compassionate, confidential sex addiction counseling within a holistic and faith-based framework that treats the whole person and supports lasting recovery.

Understanding Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder

Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder is recognized by the World Health Organization in the ICD-11 as a condition involving an intense, repetitive preoccupation with sexual fantasies, urges, or behaviors that are difficult or impossible to control and that cause significant distress or impairment in daily functioning.

Research into what is often called Hypersexual Disorder has highlighted the neurological similarities between compulsive sexual behavior and other addictive patterns. The pioneering work of Patrick Carnes and the clinical framework developed through the Sexual Addiction Screening Test (SAST) have contributed significantly to the field’s understanding of how compulsive sexual behavior develops and how it responds to structured treatment. The Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health (SASH) continues to advance clinical standards and professional training in this area.

Recognizing Compulsive Sexual Behavior

Sex addiction manifests in many different ways. Common patterns that may indicate compulsive sexual behavior include an inability to reduce or stop sexual activity despite wanting to, sexual acting out that is causing consequences in relationships or work, escalating behavior to achieve the same emotional relief, significant guilt and shame between episodes, and using sexual behavior as a primary way of managing emotional pain, stress, or anxiety.

Left untreated, compulsive sexual behavior tends to escalate. The shame and guilt cycle that characterizes this disorder creates a loop in which the shame from acting out drives the person back to the behavior as an escape from those feelings, reinforcing the pattern further.

Our Approach to Sex Addiction Counseling

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is foundational in the treatment of compulsive sexual behavior. CBT helps clients identify the automatic thoughts, emotional states, and situational triggers that precede compulsive acting out and develop concrete strategies to interrupt those patterns before they escalate. This includes building awareness of the cycle, practicing new coping behaviors, and restructuring distorted beliefs about sex, relationships, and self-worth.

Addressing the Shame and Guilt Cycle

One of the most clinically important aspects of sex addiction treatment is working directly with shame. Shame, unlike guilt, is not about behavior. It is about identity, and it drives secrecy, isolation, and relapse. Our counselors create a confidential, non-judgmental space where shame can be named, explored, and gradually reduced. Healing from the shame and guilt cycle is not optional in sex addiction recovery. It is central to it.

Treating Intimacy Disorder

Compulsive sexual behavior is often deeply connected to an intimacy disorder, a difficulty forming or maintaining genuine emotional closeness with others. Sex becomes a substitute for real connection rather than an expression of it. Our counselors work with clients to understand the roots of their intimacy patterns, often beginning in early relational experiences, and to build the capacity for authentic connection that makes recovery sustainable.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Sex addiction frequently co-occurs with depression, anxiety, trauma, attachment disorders, and substance use. Dual Diagnosis Treatment integrates care for both the compulsive sexual behavior and any co-occurring mental health conditions within a unified treatment plan. Treating the whole clinical picture produces significantly better outcomes than addressing only the presenting behavior.

Relapse Prevention Planning

Sustained recovery from compulsive sexual behavior requires a structured Relapse Prevention Plan that identifies high-risk situations, internal warning signs, and practical strategies for responding before behavior escalates. This plan is developed collaboratively and updated throughout the counseling process.

Betrayal Trauma and Family Healing

For partners and family members who have discovered compulsive sexual behavior, the experience is often traumatic. Betrayal trauma is a real clinical phenomenon with documented symptoms including intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, emotional dysregulation, and profound grief. Family Systems Therapy at New Convictions Recovery addresses both the person in recovery and the family members who have been affected, helping all parties navigate a structured process of disclosure, accountability, and rebuilding.

Our family coaching services provide additional support for loved ones who want guidance on how to respond to disclosure, establish healthy boundaries, and take care of their own wellbeing during the recovery process.

A Faith-Based and Holistic Perspective

New Convictions Recovery brings a faith-based perspective to sex addiction treatment that many clients find deeply meaningful. Our approach does not impose a single religious tradition but treats spiritual health as a genuine dimension of the whole person. For clients for whom faith is important, addressing the spiritual dimensions of shame, forgiveness, and identity rebuilding is an integral part of the healing process.
